rule suggestion : contract length

Post by llmolsonll » Tue 11 Dec '12 12:08am

Our current rule limits contracts to 5 years. Yet OOTP's versions 12th and 13th saw player's demands explode both in $ and in years.

Should we remove it or move on to 6/7 years limit?

I'm not sure - what if a player is ADAMANT about wanting an 8 year deal? you try to negotiate within the rules of 5 years, but that would likely only piss the player off (lower his negotiating mood). if he's a player on your team you're trying to extend, you're up the creek without a paddle. if he's a FA, then no one would be able to sign him.

that said, I like having the rule; these leagues are for us and our enjoyment - having a team with sour contracts are not fun to manage, nor are they easy to fill with new managers. this sucks alot of the fun out. so this rule by design helps maintain the integrity of the league.

Keep as is, everyone has to play by the same rules so it's "fair".

I can live with 6 years though.

If we're going to keep a limit, I'd prefer a 6 year limit. I like to take advantage of long term contracts, but I understand the reasons for not allowing owners to sign players to foolish contracts.

No.

It's easier than ever to re-sign players.

I agree with both KQ and Brandon on this. 5 years is fair enough.

Easier than ever to sign players? I dont agree. Players used to be happy with 5-6 years, now negociations can starting point can be 8 years since OOTP12.

A new 6 years limit seems reasonable due to new OOTP contract demands.

I don't see the purpose limiting long term contracts, Everybody in this league wants to be competitive year after year, Nobody is going to sign a contract unless they think it's the best for there team.

In solo leagues, It's easy to dump a tough contract, In CBL I have a hard time giving away contract if the player is even marginally overpaid. So I'm a little careful with who gets long term deals (though giving Bernard Adam $14Mil/yr might look pretty bad 5 years from now.)

I vote for no limit

We put the limit in to make it tougher for teams to hold onto players long term and possibly have more players as free agents. Leave it. I wish there was a way to turn off incentives to make it more difficult.

This feels like the IRL NHL thread :? !
After review, 5 is probably fine. I like the fact you can't hang on to people forever and have to time your contracts properly to even try and do that. Not that I would, but I also like the fact that you can't really screw up a team financially, maybe causing someone to quit and leave that for someone else to clean up.

On second thought not only am I in favour of 5 years maximum, I am now opposed to 6 years (instead of just being ok with it). I forgot about the extra free agents it helps create.

Oh and I have never lost a player that wanted more than 5 years. Just because they ask for it doesn't mean they won't sign for less. You might have to throw in a bit extra but it's no different than a greedy player asking for more. er.

whatever, but remember limiting longer term contracts prevent teams like yellowknife from keeping players at a discount. as it is i have to overpay to get a quality FA to come here anyway.

and if the 5 year limit increases the FA class where is the proof? our FA classes suck year after year with the limit. we would be far better off figuring out a way to keep team from stockpiling quality players in AAA rather than limit contract length.

with that said. i think offering contracts longer than 5 years is stupid anyway so i don't care

Our free agents classes suck year after year because overall talent level isnt that great in the CBL. We have little options in the minors. We actually could increase player creation modifiers to get better draft classes (do we use feeder leagues? i dont think so), though i have no idea what they currently are.

I think the talent level is just right in the CBL and way too high in other leagues. I like it that average players actually get some major league time in this league where in most leagues they never see the light of day.
